Switch Media

Switch Media is an LIR – a Local Internet Registry – and so receives our IP address allocations directly from RIPE, the internet's technical coordination organisation. And because we own and manage our own network, we have a unique AS (autonomous system) number to identify us on the internet – AS41197.

Switch Media's hosting infrastructure is completely independent, and we're proud of it. While some companies are part of a chain of servers and hosting connections, we don't rent any of our server space from anyone else. Even at peak times, only 40% of our bandwidth is used, so you won't experience a slow-down. We've got a secure data centre on site in our Liverpool HQ – all of servers are housed there, which means that if you have a problem, we're there to fix it. But that's be pretty rare, admittedly – over the last 12 months, our uptime has been over 99.9%.

Technically, that's because our data centre has all the features you'd expect from a tip-top facility, including UPS power, a climate controlled environment and multiple fibre links to the building. But in reality, it really means you'll have a reliable, pain-free hosting service.

Our partners and suppliers are industry leaders, so our network's a Cisco network, our servers are from Dell and NetApp hardware provides our storage. We peer with other ISPs in both Manchester (Edge-IX) and London (LINX) and receive transit services direct into our Liverpool data centre via Level 3 Communications and THUS (Cable and Wireless), giving you the most secure, reliable internet access, 24/7.

And because we don't believe in putting all of our internet eggs in one basket, our hosting platform is clustered and we use redundant load balancers to distribute traffic to web, mail, database and other clusters to avoid congestion. But you'll just notice our streamlined, speedy service.
